Eye Health

Substantial vision loss or blindness affects an estimated 100,000 Queenslanders, or 2.5% of the population, and this number is predicted to almost double in the next twenty years. Fortunately, 75% of this vision loss is treatable or preventable if detected early enough.

Image of an elderly couple wearing spectaclesTo reduce the incidence of avoidable vision loss or blindness within the Queensland population, QVI aims to improve eye health in Queensland through:

  • Promotion of regular eye tests,
  • increasing public awareness of eye conditions and eye health services,
  • encouraging avoidance of high risk behaviour, and
  • improving the quality of life in those with vision loss through promotion of low vision and rehabilitation services.

Indigenous Eye Health

Indigenous Australians are reported to be at even higher risk of vision loss than the general population. To view more information on Indigenous eye health click on the link below.
